Weber School District is proud to recognize Holly Barker as the recipient of this year’s Volunteer Award, honoring her outstanding service and commitment to students at Lomond View Elementary.
For the past four years, Holly has dedicated multiple days each week to working one-on-one with first and second grade students who are struggling with reading. Her efforts go far beyond basic tutoring. She brings a wealth of experience as a retired junior high science and pre-engineering teacher, offering personalized support that helps young learners build both skills and confidence.
“She sees them for the individual that they are,” said Principal Dr. Nanette Watson. “She differentiates instruction and meets their specific needs. Every student she works with shows growth.”
Holly’s impact doesn’t stop with students. Teachers praise her thoughtful follow-up and communication. “She brings me notes about where students are struggling,” said teacher Lisa Johnson. “It’s incredible insight that helps me know exactly how to support them further.”
Students look forward to their time with Holly—often asking, “Is it my turn yet?” One student affectionately described her as “big brain,” while another shared, “Every Monday, I go down to hug her.”
Holly’s passion for education is deeply rooted. “I feel very strongly that kids who don’t have the opportunity to learn basic skills are behind the ball for the rest of their lives,” Holly said. “I want to give them a little more time and help where I can.”
Whether it’s her friendly morning greetings, one-on-one reading sessions, or simply being a steady presence in the hallway, Holly has become a beloved part of the Lomond View community.
“She’s more than a volunteer,” said Dr. Watson. “She’s a part of our school. She’s our honorary Lion.”
We congratulate Holly Barker on this well-deserved honor and thank her for the joy, dedication, and heart she brings to Weber School District.
