Mountain View Junior High is celebrating a major accomplishment as their principal, Matt Patterson, has been named the UASSP Middle Level Principal of the Year. Patterson's dedication to creating a positive and inclusive school culture has earned him widespread praise from faculty, staff, students, and parents.
"Matt has done a fabulous job of creating such a wonderful community here at Mountain View," said math teacher Britney Critchley. "He's helped create a culture where everyone feels important, everyone feels included, and we're just one big, happy family." This sentiment is echoed throughout the school, with many citing Patterson's infectious enthusiasm and passion for making a difference.
Patterson's focus on building strong relationships and fostering a sense of belonging is evident in his approach to leadership. "It's been a mantra of mine for a long time that we want every kid to have a name, a face, a voice, and a purpose," Patterson explained. He believes that when students feel seen, heard, and valued, they are more likely to succeed. This philosophy translates into a vibrant school environment where students feel loved, cared for, and excited to learn.
His commitment extends beyond the students to the faculty and staff as well. Patterson fosters a collaborative environment where everyone feels supported and empowered. Caysie Bowden, the school counselor, shared. "He's super caring, has purpose in everything, but he makes everything fun." He's known for his ability to uplift and motivate his team, even during challenging times. "He sees everybody," Critchley said. "He knows what they're going through, and he's always pointing out their positives and is always working towards building them up."
Patterson's leadership style is described as authentic and inspiring. He sets clear goals, encourages innovation, and empowers his staff to take risks. "He wasn't afraid to be disruptive in the process to find success," ELA teacher Jill Schofield remarked, emphasizing Patterson's willingness to challenge the status quo for the benefit of his students. He actively seeks input from his team and values their contributions. "He picks our brains, he uses our ideas," Schofield explained. "He's not afraid to tell us no, but he never, ever disrespects us in any way."
The impact of Patterson's leadership is palpable throughout Mountain View. The school has a genuine sense of community, and everyone feels invested in its success. "Matt is an expert at building capacity and building ownership," Ben Prall shared. Prall is the current Swanson’s Discovery Center Administrator and served alongside Matt as Assistant Principal of Orion Junior High where Patterson was Principal. "He wants everyone he works with to feel like they're a part of whatever it is that we're doing." This sense of shared purpose has created a positive and energetic atmosphere where everyone is motivated to do their best.
Former students and colleagues would often return to Orion to express their gratitude for Patterson's influence on their lives. These testimonials speak volumes about his character and his dedication to making a difference. "There's no one I know that deserves this more than you," Prall said. "You work tirelessly for kids. You deserve this recognition."
Matt Patterson's recognition as UASSP Middle Level Principal of the Year is a well-deserved honor. His leadership, passion, and commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment have made a profound impact on the Mountain View community. Congratulations, Matt!
