School Counseling Programs and Activities

I acknowledge that Weber School District (WSD) provides a number of opportunities for my student to participate in College and Career Readiness activities and counseling services. Such school counseling activities and programs seek to teach, model and inspire students to develop an understanding of themselves, the world of career options, range of postsecondary education opportunities available, and tasks required to transition successfully between each school level and after high school graduation. Participation includes the following activities:

  • College and Career Planning - Through various College and Career classroom lessons, YouScience Career Interest and Aptitude Surveys, and Keys to Success, students explore and research career pathways and postsecondary education options. Participation in these activities assists students in creating academic and career goals yearly in preparation for their Personalized College and Career Readiness (PCCR) and as part of the 4 year course planning starting in 7th grade.

  • CTE and Counselor Surveys - These tools measure student mindsets and competencies as well as durable skills which are consistent with the school counseling program components. Results from this survey allow school counselors to address student needs and outcomes in the areas of academic learning, life/career goals, citizenship and feedback for CTE and Counseling Programs.

  • Postsecondary and Career Activities - Counselors facilitate opportunities and exploration through activities such as College Application week and postsecondary events, and Work Based Learning activities and events, such as Reality Town and career fairs.

  • School Counseling Services - School counseling is preventative in nature and is not mental health therapy. Counseling is a method used by school counselors to assist individuals and groups in learning how to solve problems, develop coping strategies, and make decisions about personal, health, social, emotional, behavioral, educational, vocational, financial, and other interpersonal concerns.

  • Individual and/or Group Counseling - Our schools offer short-term individual counseling to students, as well as small group counseling. Skill areas that may be addressed in these settings include: friendship and social skills; dealing with anger; anxiety; sadness or loss; learning self-control; improving self-esteem; leadership skills; and making responsible choices. Parents/guardians or school staff may refer students for counseling, or students may request counseling for themselves. These services are short‐term services aimed at the more effective education and socialization of a child within the school  community. These services are not mental health therapy and are not intended as a substitute for diagnosis or treatment for any mental health disorder. Parental consent is required and necessary forms would be provided if a student is referred for these services.

  • WSD partners with community organizations to present information to students as approved by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). Programs are age/grade level appropriate and taught in collaboration with the classroom teacher and/or counselor along with the community organization. School sites will send notification and permission for their student to participate prior to the lesson in the classroom. Parents may opt in/out of those presentations at that time. Examples of community partners include Prevent Child Abuse Utah and NuHope.
